MARY HAD A LITTLE PLAN

By Tammi Sauer

This is the first line of Mary Had a Little Plan:

Mary had a little plan that sprouted on the spot.

The original line was this:

Mary had a little plan that blossomed on the spot.

While 'blossomed' is a great verb, 'sprouted' works better for two reasons. First, the word 'sprouted' sounds really nice with the word 'spot'. Not only does it offer just the right amount of alliteration, but the repetition of that 't' sound gives the line a bit of consonance as well. Secondly, I think this tweak works because 'sprouted' feels a bit more in line with Mary's ah-ha moment. It feels more immediate that the word 'blossomed'.
